 Although hitting from a bunker is straightforward once you learn the basics of stance and posture, the thought of hitting into a greenside sand trap unsettles many golfers. Improving your technique reduces the fear of bunker play and builds self-confidence in your shot-making capabilities.

Assuming the texture of the sand is similar, and the ball is not plugged, the technique for hitting out of a greenside bunker remains the same for shots up to 30 yards (27m). The key to making this shot, as I’ve explained in my golf tips, is hitting the sand about 1 to 2 inches behind the ball, throwing the sand forward with the ball. For longer shots the only thing that changes is the swing’s length. Rhythm and tempo remain the same.

Below are 5 points I cover in my golf lessons on bunker technique. They’re the focus of my golf instruction once I’ve reviewed how a wedge works and the fundamentals of stance and posture.

1. Move Arms Away in Unison

Having taken a slightly open stance, resist the temptation to get too steep early in the takeaway. Keep the wrists passive as you sweep the club away. Try to synchronize the arm swing and body turn. In other words, make the first part of the takeaway a one-piece movement. Also, make sure the clubhead follows the path away from the ball parallel to the line of your toes.

2. Rotate and Open

Rotate your left arm and wrists as the swing continues, as if you were looking at a wristwatch. It’s a visual I often use in my golf instruction to help players remember to make the move. It opens the clubface and helps maximize the bounce effect on the sand wedge at impact. Also, start hinging your wrists as the clubhead passes your right thigh. Keep your head still, turn the left shoulder in under the chin, and turn your back to the target.

3. Turn to the Top

As your body turns, you should feel as if your clubhead is pointing toward the sky and your wrists are cocked. Keep your head and body centered over the over the ball. Swing the club down on a slightly flatter plane, with good rhythm and tempo, as always. This is a key move any time you swing a club.

4. Make the Right Contact

Hitting the right impact point is critical when playing from the sand. In golf lessons I tell students to visualize the ball sitting on top of a tee instead of the sand, then focus on clipping the tee beneath the ball, which just happens to get in the swing’s way. Executed properly, this move will throw the ball out of the bunker with just the right amount of sand.

5. Create a Controlled Explosion

As the club comes down in the downswing, you should feel your hands drag left, pulling them across the ball through impact. Make sure that your right hand doesn’t cross over the left and that you clear your left hip as the club comes through. If the stance and clubhead are open sufficiently, the ball will fly straight, with a high trajectory.

Of course, the technique for longer bunker shots differs slightly. The key with longer shots is in the follow-through. Use a full finish for long bunker shots, and a short finish for shorter bunker shots.

Below are two exercises that I use in golf lessons to help students improve their bunker technique:

This exercise establishes how the sand wedge should really work. Stand in a practice bunker without a ball. Adopt your normal bunker stance and take several swings down into the sand. The object is to get the feel of the clubhead dragging through the sand, not digging into it. After a dozen shots, try hitting a ball. Pick out a spot where you want the ball to land and then go for it. Repeat the exercise until you’re comfortable with the feel of the wedge splashing through the sand.

Focusing on a spot where the clubhead hits can divert attention from where it emerges, resulting in a fluffed shot. The “Two Lines” exercise helps eliminate the tendency to lose focus. Stand in a bunker and take your normal bunker stance. Draw two lines in the sand about 6 to 7 inches apart. The lines represent the length of the sand you should carve from under the ball. Line up several balls between the two lines then hit them. The clubhead should enter the sand where the first line is and emerge where the second line is.

Practicing these two exercises while keeping the 5 points in mind will help build better bunker technique. As you become more and more comfortable with hitting out of a bunker, you will increase your self-confidence. And that, as I often tell my students, leads to better play and lower golf handicaps.

 Your golf bag is a piece of golf accessory that allows you to carry all your other equipment with you such as the clubs, tees, markers, and perhaps an umbrella or towel. This piece of equipment doesn’t necessarily have direct effects on your game but may have great influence on your overall game, comfort and fatigue level.

There are two major things that may affect your choice of golf bag- the gears that you will put into the bag and the way you will carry the bag. Are you making use of a caddie or a golf cart?

To these, there are basically three kinds of golf bags: the staff bag or the tour bag the travel or carry bag and the cart bag.

The staff bag or tour bags. The largest selection of golf bags is staff or the tour bags. They are readily equipped with enough storage space for 14 standard golf clubs and have rooms for other golf equipments that are necessary during the games. The majority of travel bags are made of plastic, nylon and other lighter materials. There are carry bags that have added features that may expand the ease of use. Many are equipped with straps, others appear with stands. These stands allow players to get their clubs easily.

Cart golf bags. These are relatively smaller than the tour bags. However, using this kind of golf bag may require the help of a cart or caddie since it is more bulky than most tour bags. As the name suggests, cart bags are designed exactly to be used by golf carts. These have lesser pockets and are generally made of light materials.

Things to consider when choosing golf bags

- Given that you have a caddie with you, the size and weight of the golf bag may not necessarily bother you, unless it has become too heavy for your caddie. In the sport of fly fishing the most popular all-round is direct drive, where the handle spins backwards when line is released. This makes it easy for fly fisherman to tell how much line is going out and how much there retrieving but keep in mind most fly fisherman aren’t trying to reel in line from a bonefish swimming at 20 mph which makes that spinning handle dangerous for your fingers, hands or anything else it could come in contact with. This is where anti-reverse reels come in for the rescue. The handle on an anti-reverse reel stays stationary as line is striped away from the reel. For lighter species the direct drive is a good choice. But for larger species both options have there pluses and minuses, because when the drag is set lightly on anti-reverse reels, they have a tendency to slip when reeling the line in.

It doesn’t matter what type of reel you choose, an efficient drag system is one of the most important parts of the reel in saltwater fly fishing. Saltwater fish are much stronger and faster then most equivalent freshwater species and for that fact they require a better smoother drag for a fun fight. As technology increases, drags in these saltwater fly reels continue to get better and most quality name reels have able drag systems.

Saltwater fly reels come in a variety of sizes and like freshwater reels and rods they are sized according to what weight line they are made for. In saltwater fly fishing the reel size is crucial because large reels have a greater diameter of line on the spool, meaning the more line you’re able to reel in per crank of the reel. This becomes important when you’re fighting fish that may take out hundreds of yards of line. The size of the reel depends on the fish your targeting and how much line and backing you plan to use in fighting the fish. Fish such as speckled trout require much less line capacity compared to a tarpon or billfish. Also remember the heavier the weight line, the more reel capacity it takes up.

Saltwater fly reels unlike most freshwater reels are made of corrosion resistant materials to fight the harsh elements of saltwater. These stainless steels and anodized aluminum materials are still not tuff enough to fight against these elements. To make your investment last, you must clean your reel after every saltwater outing. Many anglers use an old toothbrush, to lightly scrub the reel inside and out with warm freshwater and a mild dish soap and re-lubricating the reel when necessary.

Clean rivers and lakes are necessary for them to survive. They will move about from one habitat to another as temperature changes throughout the year.

Smallies prefer rock strewn, gravelly hard bottoms. It is not common for them to stay in areas with soft sandy or muddy bottoms. Bronzebacks, which are found in rivers, usually hangout in shallow rocky pools and ledges during the cooler spring weather. It is also likely for them to settle on grass beds and weedy patches growing on small islands and along the banks, especially as the growth attracts forage. When the water heats up, they will tend to transfer to the deeper pools kin the rivers main channels, or to the faster moving parts of the riffles that offer cooler water.

In lakes, they in general move to deeper water as the water warms up. They cling to around structure and shade. Smallies can be found in deeper grass and weed beds where forage and cover is available.

They prefer to spawn in water temperatures within 62 to 65 degrees. They can usually be found spawning sometime between April and June. They will spawn in depths of 2 to 10 feet. The male cleans debris from a small circular area to create the nest and guards it for about a month after spawning to allow the fry to grow to swim freely.

The rocky lakes of Canadian Shield produce a perfect environment for not only the large trophy of these species but for a great number of other fishes. On Lake Panache, it is not uncommon to catch your limit right off the dock of smallmouth. If you are looking for big smallmouth bass then you’ll probably want to visit this lake. Smallmouths are one of the hardest fighting fish in Canada but it’s definitely easy to look for it in Lake Panache, its maybe because of the cool spring fed water that makes them extra scrappy and they also taste fantastic.

Northern Ontario is also well-known for big trophy brown bass especially in Five Mile Lake. They are found off rocky points, shoals, reeds and islands.

Even though this kind of fish is not a dominant specie in the lake, it still has a healthy population and can still provide a full day of fishing if you go after them. They are usually around 2 pounds but a fair number of 3 and 4 pounders are also caught. Another lake which is in close proximity with the Five Mile Lake also offers a good site for bass fishing, smallmouth bass in particular.

One more lake in Ontario provides an excellent fishing, particularly for smallmouth bass fishes. Norse Lake remains calm even in windier days. The smallmouth bass population in this lake reaches into the 5 pound class.

Let’s discuss the intricacies and place a perspective on frames for your go-kart. The chassis as it is called in professional and enthusiast circles, is by far the most important piece of this machine. The construction is paramount in maintaining a solid go-kart. What constitutes a frame? Think of a frame simply as parts holding a component together. In the case of these speedsters, the frame is welded together by torsion bars. Stiff frames are a result of shorter bars crossed together, and more flexible frames are associated with longer bars.

Stiff frames that do not provide flexibility were the backbone of earlier go-karts and broke down easily. First off, simpler go-karts do not have the specifications needed (most important, suspension and tire traction) to ease the punishment frames go through while turning, accelerating, and stopping. Running on 2 or 4 cycle engines does not help compensate the health of a frame. A lack of traction on your tires will cause uneven weight transfer and stability on your frame, ripping one or both sides loose at the same time. In essence, the frame is responsible for determining how well your vehicle moves zipping on asphalt, concrete, or dirt - dictating your performance on wide turns and shorter turns.

A sturdy, well-built frame is the key to manoeuvring well on the track, especially when turning. Wait, isn’t a frame supposed to be resistant to the rigors and demands of punishing your go-kart as it explodes forward? Of course - but the most important criteria for an excellent frame is to negotiate turns well. Frames are directly responsible for how well go-karts turn left and right. Weaker go-karts with cheap components are known to slide and drift along turns - in some instances, flipping to its side entirely with careless driving. “Side bite” is referred to keeping a go-kart planted to the track without sliding. Without the proper frame, go-karts will manoeuvre out of control, even shutting off in some cases due to over pressure to the engine.

The design of the go-kart chassis has everything to do with how well it moves on turns and maintaining side bite. If the width of the rear rails (go-kart frames constitute front rails and rear rails) is narrow, with measurements ranging from 24 to 25 - from “kingpin” to “kingpin”, the ends of the rail - it will have less side bite. Wider rails barely ever exceed 30 on standard go-karts. The dynamics of the front and rear rails can be effectively pictured using this example: suppose you had two bottles - a two-gallon jug and a 16 oz. Water bottle. Giving it a swift, hard poke to its side - which container has the best chance of tipping to its side? If you guessed the water bottle, you guessed right! Wider rails provide stability and “foundation” while turning, reducing the side bite overall.

Choosing the right frame for your go-kart can largely depend on the surface you are riding on. Whether it is asphalt, concrete, or dirt - different types of frames behave differently according to surface. For example, dirt track frames should consist of a short front rail and a longer back rail. Dirt tracks place a lot of stress and challenge on the front rail and stiff back rails zipping through dirt can cut power to the engine while cutting a turn. The best frame for riding dirt tracks are ones with narrow fronts and longer backs, vice versa to asphalt and concrete.

The A-1 performance of a frame largely depends on tire traction as well. Low traction tires (tires that do not “stick” well to the ground) are not grooved enough to withstand the rigors of the surface, rattling the stiff frame to oblivion. It also causes uneven weight transfer throughout the go-kart, and that is a no-no for maintaining optimum control of your money maker. Consider this scenario: you have two pairs of roller skates. One has wheels half-an-inch in width and the other has 3-inch-wide wheels. Which pair would provide better balance as you roller skate? If you love mathematics, treat traction as a formula with the equation: traction = stability. Go ahead, transform yourself into a karting aficionado with this valuable piece of knowledge!

A major issue among karting enthusiasts is the durability and longevity of flexible frames. Exposure to punishing breaks and turns, along with the gruelling hits to track walls every now and then, can distort the frame which cannot be “popped” back to its original condition. Experts recommend replacing frames every year. There are many maintenance techniques you could practice on your kart to keep flexibility intact like running your kart through a course backwards. Racing a kart using the finish line as your starting point and your starting point as the finish line will have a “reverse effect” on the frame, shaping it opposite of what it would be shaped if you were racing the course normally. It’s like turning back the hands of time on your speedster!

The question over choosing the right go-kart chassis boils down to flexibility. High traction tires and a stiff frame is a recipe for disaster, causing your machine to turn stiffly and generate strenuous effort on the curves. Low traction tires will cause uneven weight transfer and break apart your frame like bread crumbs. Options for frames mainly depend on what type of go-kart you’re riding, as each go-kart and their engine work best under certain scenarios. Stiff frames are a staple of 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines and flexible frames are found with higher horsepower engines. Remember, the more rigorous the circuit, the more flexible a chassis should be!

 United States Sets Date for E-Passports

The U.S. State Division says all U.S. passports issued starting in October 2006 will contain RFID chips.

The U.S. Express Division issued its final rules today specifying its plans to concern electronic passports (e-passports) containing RFID tags. The division says it intends to begin its e-passport program in December. The first stage will be a pilot program in which e-passports will be issued to government employees utilizing official or diplomatic passports for government travel. This pilot, the division says, will permit field-testing prior towards the very first issuance towards the American traveling public, early next year. By October 2006, all U.S. passports, using the exception of a small number of emergency passports issued by U.S. embassies or consulates, will include RFID tags.

The final rule incorporates amendments resulting from comments to a proposed rule originally published in the Federal Register on Feb. 18. The State Department says it received a total of 2,335 comments concerning its proposal to introduce e-passports. The division categorized 98.5 percent from the feedback as negative, 1 percent as positive and 0.5 percent as neutral. Concerning issues raised by those comments, the department says 2,019 expressed security and/or privacy concerns; 171 raised basic objections to the use of the information chip and/or RFID; 85 expressed basic objections towards the use of electronic passports; 52 listed basic technology concerns; and 8 focused on religious problems. The feedback are obtainable for review at the travel.express.gov section from the department’s Web site.

The chip used in the e-passports will comply with the ISO 14443 RFID specification and contain the same information as a passport’s information page?the passport holder’s name, nationality, gender, date of birth, place of birth and digitized photo. The chip will also include the passport amount, concern date, expiration date and type of passport. The ISO 14443 specification permits chips to be study when an e-passport is placed within approximately 10 centimeters of an RFID interrogator (reader).

Of all objections the department received regarding its plans, the overwhelming majority expressed concern over the possible for skimming and/or eavesdropping. Skimming may be the act of creating an unauthorized connection with an RFID tag so that you can gain access to its data. Eavesdropping may be the interception from the electronic communication session between an RFID tag and an authorized reader.

To prevent skimming, the division will add shielding material to the passport’s front cover and spine. The department will also implement Basic Access Control (BAC), which functions as a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in the form of characters printed on the passport information page. Prior to a passport’s tag can be study, this PIN should be inputted into an RFID reader. The BAC also enables the encryption of any communication between the chip and interrogator.

To ensure that U.S. e-passports are interoperable with other nations’ systems, the document’s embedded RFID chip will comply with specifications developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The ICAO specification requires a minimum capacity of 32 kilobytes of memory for storing data on the chip, whereas the U.S. government has opted for a chip with 64 kilobytes of memory to allow for the potential storage of extra data or biometric indicators such as fingerprints or iris scans, sometime within the future. Before the division adds additional information or biometric identifier other than a digitized photograph, however, it says it will seek public comment through a new rule-making process.

Adventure Boys and Mitsuru Adachi’s Other Mangas

 Mitsuru Adachi, a widely known sports (mostly baseball) manga author was born February 9, 1951 in Isezaki, Japan. Debuting in 1970, he became famous after mangas like Touch and Nine. They brought him popularity and recognition throughout Asia. His most works feature senior pupils or college students as lead characters. Since 1970 he has published over 20 mangas including short story collections and multi-volume series.

Manga Nine (released in 1978) is a high school baseball and romance story. It made Adachi a renowned Japanese mangaka and proceeded to 3 TV series. Katsuya and Susumu start playing baseball to impress Yuri, Katsuya’s girlfriend later appearing the coach’s daughter. But Katsuya is also adored by Yukimi… The intrigue is about love relations and the team’s success.

1980 released Adachi’s early big manga Miyuki (12 volumes). Wakamatsu Masato and his step-sister Miyuki are high schoolers in Toukyou living on their own without their father working overseas. Charming Miyuki is a star among guys around Masato while he dates Kajima Miyuki, a dream high school girl. Only after eventful years do the “flatmates” realize their personal preferences. The well-styled manga boasts an interesting plot, nice scene and youth emotions.

The next year saw Adachi’s superhit manga Touch (26 volumes) finished in print in 2005. This shounen story tells about 2 twin brothers, their pretty neighbor and baseball activity.

The manga (1981-1986) belongs to a top author, Mitsuru Adachi. This wonderful writer usually relates his stories to baseball and Koshien, the stadium of the All High School Baseball Tournament.

The Rough manga was released in 1987 now counting up 12 volumes. It’s a romance/sports story seemingly inspired by Romeo and Juliet. 2 young gifted sportsmen, Yamato Keisuke and Ninomiya Ami, come from rival confectionery families. Ninomiya’s grandfather had marketed an owl-shaped cake, but Yamato’s grandfather copied the product adding ears which killed the competitive business. After such a shock Ninomiya died cursing the Yamatos and starting their war.

Manga Nijiiro Togarashi (Rainbow-Colored Chili Powder, 1990) is Adachi’s rare sci-fi manga (11 volumes). Here Shichimi is going to Edo (Tokyo’s pre-capital name). His deceased mother had just left him a walnut and sent him to his half-siblings. Shichimi makes farewell to an old tough firefighter whose cloak emblem is the same with his. On arrival in Edo Shichimi faces a stranger sneering at outer peace and disillusioning people.

The H2 manga was in print 1992 to 2004 becoming Adachi’s biggest work (34 volumes). It developed into a namesake series. Kunimi Hiro had been a baseball talent before learning his arm was crucially damaged. So he transfers to a high school without a baseball team only to find out there his arm had a wrong diagnosis being perfectly OK. Then Hiro arranges a premier baseball team against his ex best friend and teammate, Hideo, in the Koshien.

2000 released a 5-volume manga Always Beautiful Sky (Itsumo Misora) about 6 kids brought together by providence.

The Katsu! manga has been released since 2002. In it Satoyama Katsuki is a carefree and lazy teenager. His secret love, Mizutani Katsuki, has a father who was a pro boxer and inherits this hobby. Satoyama enters a boxing gym just to impress Mizutani but soon discovers genius abilities inside…

The Cross Game manga has reached 17 volumes so far since 2005. It proceeded into an anime series. The hero, Kitamura Koh, has long befriended the Tsukishimas. Their ties are even supported by symbols. But their friendship has to shockingly end some day…

In 2009 Adachi released a short manga, My Sweet Sunday, together with another famous Japanese writer, Rumiko Takahashi. It’s an autobiography describing their careers in the manga business.
